It Takes a Village

I was a volunteer creative and stitcher as part of “It Takes a Village”, Farsley & Calverley’s Community Project for Leeds 2023, City of Culture. My role involved helping children express their creativity through drawing and collage, helping them to achieve their visions and learning more about teaching young people. The motifs formed the basis for the community banners, each representing a different aspect of Farsley, which were laid out on paper to later be transferred into fabric. As a group of local stitchers, we made all the motifs and attached them to the large scale banners collaboratively. We used scrap fabrics sourced from SCRAP, Leeds and donations from the volunteers themselves and a range of sewing techniques on the machine and by hand. The project culminated in an exhibition at Sunny Bank Mills, inviting members of different communities to view the banners and celebrate the collaborative project.
